Map showing the Uninsured Texans by CountyTexas still has the highest rate of uninsured residents in the nation, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released in September. A survey found that 5.8 million Texans, 23 percent of the population, did not have health insurance in 2011. That includes 13% of children, 22% of women, 24% of men and 26% of the employed workforce in Texas.

Meanwhile, two demographers said that if Texas decides to implement federal health care reform, which includes Medicaid expansion, more than half of the uninsured in the state could have coverage by 2014.
