Three federal organizations that serve seniors and people with disabilities were moved under a new umbrella agency in April — the Administration for Community Living in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This reorganization is designed to make it easier for people with disabilities and seniors to get services and supports they need to remain in their homes and community, instead of an institution.
The following agencies are now under the Administration for Community Living:
- The Administration on Aging which promotes a coordinated system of home and community-based long-term care and services for seniors.
- The Administration on Developmental Disabilities, which helps increase independence, productivity and community integration for people with developmental disabilities. The ADD also changed its name in April to the Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. AIDD programs include DD councils such as the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities; state protection and advocacy organizations such as Disability Rights Texas; and university centers for excellence including the Texas Center for Disability Studies at The University of Texas at Austin and the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University.
- The Office on Disability, which oversees the coordination of federal programs and policies that enhance the health and well-being of people with disabilities.
