(Austin) — Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) announced that the Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities awarded $228,610 for the first year of a project to Any Baby Can of San Antonio, Inc. The five-year project will promote health, physical fitness, and inclusion of children and youth with developmental disabilities through recreational and fitness activities.
“The whole family will be involved in the health and wellness plan which will include both exercise and nutrition,” Van de Putte said. “Any Baby Can plans to work with at least 30 families in the first year and 50 to 60 families each of the remaining four years.” The project will work with families in San Antonio and Bexar County. Participants will receive an instructional DVD on home fitness, exercise picture book and wellness/fitness journal.
The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities
The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities is a 27-member board dedicated to improving the lives of more than 450,000 Texans with developmental disabilities. The council uses a variety of activities — such as grant projects, technical assistance, public awareness and leadership training — to enable people with disabilities to live, grow up, attend school and work in the community. Developmental disabilities are severe, chronic disabilities that occur before the age of 22, such as autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness, traumatic brain injury and epilepsy.
